Lobethal Dippers 10-32 Defeated Birdwood Red 5-22
The Lobethal Dippers are the Torrens Valley Table Tennis Association A Grade Premiers for season 2019 securing a 10-32 to 5-22 win against Birdwood Red.
Both Grand Finalists had enjoyed stints atop the Premiership ladder at different stages throughout the season with Birdwood Red securing an emphatic 12 - 3 victory in their one and only clash during the minor rounds of the season.
The Dippers players were well aware some singles upsets were required and got off to a brilliant start with Mary Harrison scoring her first ever win over Todd Gripton. Both Scott McCarthy and Dylan Jones reversed previous losses to Brett Thomas and Brad Teale respectively and with wins to Eric Harrison and Scott Mallard the Dippers were off to a flying start and up 5-1 after completion of the opening round of singles. The Dippers were able to keep the momentum going their way in the reverse singles with further wins to E and M Harrison though Gripton troubled E Harrison with a clever game plan before Harrison snuck home 8-11 11-7 7-11 11-5 11-7.
This meant all the Dippers needed to claim outright victory was one more singles win and the McCarthy duo were keen to oblige. Addison McCarthy won a thriller against seasoned campaigner Neville Maczkowiack 11-9 12-10 8-11 5-11 11-8 while S McCarthy also won but in three quick games against Teale. Thomas added some respectability to Birdwood Reds final score line with a singles win over Dippers Josh Custance and then backed it up with a doubles win with Teale.
E and M Harrison won the top doubles against Gripton and Nick Seager while Graham Stoodley was the standout player for Birdwood Red teaming up with Maczkowiack to win the second double Stoodley's third match win of the night.
