Lobethal Lights 10-33 Defeated Birdwood Black 5-19
“Blackout”
In a dramatic final conclusion to the 2020 Torrens Valley Table Tennis season the Lights of Lobethal shone bright, while Birdwood were left in darkness. Birdwood Black had, up to the last week of the season, been undefeated. The two previous encounters between the teams had ended in 8-7 victories to Birdwood with their top order dominating, but on finals night they were dealt a blow with their top 3 players being defeated.
Rohan Gilmour secured Lights’ first rubber smashing his way over rarely beaten Mark Weinhengst. Followed by Ollie Hughes’ victory over Todd Gripton. Paul Arnup eventually beat Nick Seagar in 5 tight sets, 12-10 in the last. Young gun Addison McCarthy and veteran Robert Fechner won in 3 tight straight sets over John Khazam and Brad Teale respectively. This gave the Lights a 5-1 lead. There were no real surprises in the reverse singles. Dave Shultz easily disposed of Tim Satchel and Arnup, completing an unbeaten season for Schultz against those two. Gilmour bashed his way through Gripton, while Satchel clinically disposed of Seagar. It was McCarthy who brought up victory no.8, and Fechner no.9 soon after. The doubles became a formality and Birdwood’s no.1 pairing of Weihengst /Gripton won the most entertaining match of the night in 5. It was up to the Lights father and son combination of Scott and Addison McCarthy to finish the night off winning emphatically in the final set 11-0 to ice Lobethal’s recent domination in the top tier competition 10-33 to 5-19.
