Tournament 2022
The 2022 Torrens Valley Table Tennis tournament had a touch of de ja vu with a couple of new twists thrown in. In the C grade singles it was just like last year in that Liam Coulter and Ken Li won through to the final. However, Ken Li turned the tables beating Liam in straight sets. The women's singles was also de ja vu with Corrine O'Shea and Di Perkins facing off in the final again with Di’s vast experience and consistent game play proving too strong once again for Corrine. However, Di couldn’t repeat last years feat of winning the B Grade singles by being knocked out by the eventual winner Jaimen Rush. Jaimen played well and proved too strong in the final beating Shaun Counihan in 4 sets. The unexpected twist of the tournament came when Dave Shultz knocking out Eric Harrison (13 time winner) in the open singles semi-final. Dave was in exceptional form going on to beat Todd Gripton in the final in straight sets and also winning the handicap event beating Eric Harrison who sportingly forfeited the match so that the evening wouldn’t become ridiculously late.
There was a high entry rate for the doubles where there were some strong performances. Ollie Hughes and Darren Stanbury were in strong form winning the open final against Eric Harrison and Eric Jaeger in straight sets. Father and son duo Adam and Aish-James Wake were too strong for Jaimen Rush and Brad Green in the B Grade final also winning in straight sets. In C Grade Matt Hughes usual doubles partner was ill so he teamed up with David Growden at short notice and still made the final. However, Liam Coulter and Jacob Snoad proved too strong in the end winning in 4 sets. In the women’s doubles the super experienced pairing of Audrey King and Di Perkins got the better of Corrine O’Shea and Natalie Gripton in straight sets. Audrey also Paired with Eric Harrison to take out the mixed doubles event again winning against the father daughter duo of Todd and Natalie Gripton.
The Torrens Valley Table Tennis tournament continued Monday evening at Lobethal with the juniors taking center stage. Rex Jaeger and Riley O’Shea faced off in the boy’s singles grand final. It was an extremely tight game with Riley jumping out to a 2 set to 1 advantage. Rex dug deep coming out and winning the fourth set to send the game into the 5th set. Riley was keen to go for the knockout blow but unfortunately for him couldn’t land his shots and Rex kept his calm to claim the victory. Riley had his revenge in the doubles teaming up with his brother Cohen and beating Rex and Noah Bartlett. It was a very evenly matched doubles with the game also going 5 sets.
In the girl’s singles Grace Jaeger and Charlotte Hughes won through to the grand final. Charlotte raced out to a good start winning the first set easily 11-4. Grace held her nerve and worked her way back into the game winning the next 3 sets and claiming the girls singles crown for 2022. Thanks to organizers and players who competed in the 2022 Torrens Valley Table Tennis Tournament making it an excellent event.
