Torrens Valley Table Tennis Association Grand Final Results 07/09/2022
A Grade
Birdwood 8-30 Defeated Lobethal Tigers 7-28
Birdwood go back-to-back with a hotly contested very close A grade final. Birdwood gym was packed again for the 2022 grand final night. The night started with E. Harrison beating M. Weinhengst in a quality top single. Birdwood were able to get the next 3 singles through T. Gripton, N. Seager and D. Shultz with Gripton and Seager made to fight for their wins in 5 & 4 sets respectively. M. Hannaford played well for the Lobethal Tigers beating J Khouzam. Birdwood struck straight back with B. Teale having a win over M. Gray. After the first round of singles it was 4-2 Birdwood’s way. All eyes turned to the reverse singles game between Harrison and Shulz who had high quality battles during the season and mid-season tournament. The match didn’t disappoint and it was Shulz who was able to secure the important win. Wins to Gripton and Weinhengst in the other early reverse singles meant Birdwood was only one win away from premiership glory. The Tigers however had different ideas and fought back well with Gray and S. Mallard getting their first wins of the night and Hannaford continuing his good form with his second win. After the reverse singles Birdwood were still searching for the elusive 8th match win. The pairing of S McCarthy/A McCarthy pulled out all the stops, playing really well to beat Gripton and Seager in 5 sets. The Hannaford/Gray pairing also won in 4 sets for Lobethal drawing games to 7 all and leaving the night hanging on the top double between Harrison/ Mallard and Shulz/ Weinhengst. It was an excellent high pressure A grade grand final game. In the end Birdwood were victorious in 5 sets with all players putting in 110%. The final result was 8-30 to 7-28 win to Birdwood for the 2022 grand final. Congratulations to all teams and players throughout the season and here’s looking forward to 2023!
