Tournament 2023
In the Torrens Valley Table Tennis Tournament 2023 there were some new winners and some echoes from last year. Todd Gripton again made the Men’s Open final but lost to Darren Stanbury in straight sets. Darren did have to work hard to make the final with a very close 5 set match against Ben Turner and a 4 set match against Jaimen Rush in the semi-final. Jaimen Rush was in top form making and winning the B Grade final and Handicap event. Liam Coulter once again made the C/D grade final but fell short against new player Michael Parker. Something that didn’t change was Di Perkins winning the Women’s open.
In the doubles Darren combined with Ollie Hughes to again take the crown in the open against Ben Turner and Mark Wilhelm who also made the B grade final where they played a tight 4 set match against father and son duo Scott and Addison McCarthy. Ben and Mark proved too strong on the night. In the mixed doubles Audrey King again made the finals with a different partner Walter Jaeger. They came up against last year finalists of Todd and Natalie Carpenter with the father and daughter combination proving too strong in a hard fought 5 set match. The highly experienced pairing of Walter and Audrey didn’t have an answer for Todd’s smashes and Natalie’s consistency in the fifth set. Audrey featured again in the Women’s doubles with Di Perkins who were to strong in the final for the up and coming Jessica George and Grace Jaeger. In the C/D grade doubles final Liam and Michael featured again. Michael teamed up with fellow Gumeracha team mate Luke Faucett while Liam had to call in Noah Bartlett at short notice as his original partner had fallen ill. Michael and Luke had a convincing win.
The Junior tournament had some familiar faces as well as some new ones. Rex Jaeger proved to strong for the improving Archer Stanbury in boys singles, while Alana Francis defeated Joy Jaeger in the girls singles.
Thanks to all who participated, organised and umpired to make an enjoyable tournament. Special thanks to Birdwood table tennis club who hosted the event and for setting up and packing up late at night.
