Tournament 2024
The Torrens Valley Table Tennis Tournament has been run and done for season 2024. Eric Harrison returned seeking to add to his Men’s Open titles and it looked like he was going to accomplish this in the fourth set against defending champion Darren Stanbury before Stanbury won the fourth set 12-10 and then went on to take the fifth set 11-6. Natalie Carpenter again made the Women’s Open grand final and was 2 sets up before Corrine O’Shea won the last three sets 11-8 13-11 11-9 in what was another extremely close match. The handicap singles couldn’t have been closer with Ben Turner and Addison McCarthy squaring off in the final. Both players started on 10 with McCarthy jumping out to a 7 point lead. In the forties Turner started reeling McCarthy in but couldn’t stop McCarthy getting to a 50-48 lead. With 2 match points to save Turner served two excellent serves which McCarthy netted on return. With the game now 50 all whoever won the next point would win the match. McCarthy served to start a lengthy rally of attacking shots before McCarthy pushed a ball wide but it bounced high. Turner took the opportunity and smashed the ball across court for the victory. Brayden Green had run into some good form before the tournament and it continued for him in the B grade singles having a straight set win over Chad Harrop in the final. Josh Custance was also dominant in the C grade singles also recording a straight sets win over Jessica George.
Jessica George would team up with Grace Jaeger in the C Grade doubles and get her revenge by beating Custance and Rhys Knox in 4 sets. Natalie Carpenter teamed up with the experienced Audrey King and also exacted some revenge over O’Shea and Tamara McKee winning in straight sets to take the women’s doubles title. Carpenter teamed up again with father Todd Gripton taking the mixed doubles title as well.
Addison McCarthy would partner with his father Scott and they would become an unstoppable force. In the B grade doubles Nick Seagar and Chad Harrop gave them a scare with a 5 set match however the McCarthys proved too strong winning their way into the finals and beating the duo of Walter Jaeger and grandson Rex Jaeger in straight sets. Not content with one title they also powered their way into the Men’s Open doubles final where they faced off against multiple title winners Stanbury and Ollie Hughes. McCarthys held their form and nerve and caused the upset of the tournament winning in straight sets!
Thanks to all who participated, organised and umpired to make an enjoyable tournament. Special thanks to Birdwood table tennis club who hosted the event and for setting up and packing up late at night.
