A Grade
Lobethal Settlers 8-33 Defeated Birdwood Mt Pleasant Blue 7-27
Birdwood Mt Pleasant Blue entered the grand final with an impressive record, having secured four consecutive A grade premierships. However, they faced formidable opposition in Lobethal Settlers, the top-ranked team, who were determined to halt Birdwood's streak. The evening commenced with the super consistent Eric Harrison providing momentum for the Settlers by achieving a straight sets victory over Mark Weinhengst. Shahab Nikaein responded for Birdwood Mt Pleasant Blue, utilizing his pimple rubbers to give him precise touch and placement necessary to overcome Eric Jaeger 11-9 in the fifth set. This win was pivotal for Birdwood Mt Pleasant Blue, followed by further successes from Todd Gripton and Natalie Carpenter. Carpenter demonstrated composure under pressure, defeating Rex Jaeger 11-9 in another closely contested fifth set. The evening wasn’t looking good for the Settlers as they were 3-1 down before Andrew Trinkle and Walter Jaeger delivered crucial victories for Lobethal. In the reverse singles matches, Nikaein engaged in a hard-fought five-set encounter with Harrison, marked by intense rallies and competitive play. Harrison recovered from a fall during a critical point at 10-9 in the fifth set to equalize, yet Nikaein ultimately prevailed 13-11, maintaining Birdwood Mt Pleasant Blue’s trend of winning close matches. Eric Jaeger subsequently claimed the Settlers’ first and only five-set win against Weinhengst, with a scoreline of 7-11, 8-11, 14-12, 14-12, 11-8. Todd Gripton restored Birdwood Mt Pleasant Blue’s advantage through a demanding five-set victory over Rex Jaeger, before the Settlers gained momentum, securing two additional rubbers through twins Joshua Trinkle, Andrew Trinkle. Brad Teale of Birdwood Mt Pleasant Blue provided a strong challenge for veteran Walter Jaeger, who came from behind in the fourth set to secure his win at 10-12 making it three in a row. Heading into the doubles, the Settlers required just one more win to clinch the premiership. Birdwood Mt Pleasant Blue succeeded in the top and middle doubles; however, Walter Jaeger and Andrew Trinkle won the final doubles match, ensuring Lobethal Settlers' overall victory with a final score of 8-33 to 7-27. The evening featured highly competitive table tennis befitting a grand final, with only two points separating the teams. Appreciation is extended to Birdwood Mt Pleasant Table Tennis Club for hosting all four grand finals and the Torrens Valley Table Tennis executive for organising and running a successful season.
B Grade
Mt Torrens 14-44 Defeated Harrogate 1-13
Top team Mount Torrens took the honours against second ranked Harrogate in the B Grade grand final 14-44 to 1-13. Although the score appeared one sided, it wasn't a total annihilation by Mt Torrens. Five of the rubbers could have easily swung the other way having gone to five games. Whilst Ben Turner at number 1 for Mt Torrens dispatched his father David Turner in three quick games, the senior Turner almost turned the tables in the reverse singles against Mount Torrens's Mark Wilhelm. The wiley Wilhelm tried all his tricks, but D. Turner kept him on his toes until the very end, when a Wilhelm special, sizzling spin serve bamboozled him one too many times and Wilhelm won 7-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9. It had been a similar story for Riley O'Shea at number 2 for Harrogate, having just lost 9-11 in the fifth against Wilhelm in the initial round of singles. R. O'Shea came back with a vengeance against B. Turner, and although he didn't do any of his trademark ball breaking smashes, his dead rubber on one side of his bat kept B. Turner on tenterhooks. R. O'Shea eventually succumbed to B. Turner's consistency 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 7-11, 8-11. Although Julian Bedford and Nick Heyne trounced their singles opponents in straight games, the Mount Torrens pair struggled against Harrogate's Callum Hemer paired with you guessed it - R. O'Shea! R. O'Shea and Hemer claimed Harrogate's only victory for the night in a see-sawing five setter. Whilst Bedford's bafflingly inconsistent serves hampered Hemer's hallmark hard hits, and Heyne's handiwork held them in prime position to win, R. O'Shea proved too good and the final score was 6-11, 17-15, 6-11, 12-10, 11-6. A great night of quality table tennis was had by all thanks to the fantastic efforts of the Torrens Valley Table Tennis Association.
C Grade
Gumeracha White 10-35 Defeated Gumeracha Magpies 5-20
The C Grade grand final this year saw two Gumeracha teams competing for 2025 bragging rights. Gumeracha White established an early lead by securing victories in the first five rubbers. Aaryon Longo then delivered the Magpies' initial win of the evening, later continuing his impressive performance by winning his reverse singles match against Taryn Hawke in five sets. Despite these efforts, Gumeracha White had already clinched overall victory, with Daniel Bamford, Rhys Knox, Travis Ades, and Josh Custance each winning both of their singles matches. The Magpies did find further success in the doubles, capturing wins in both the top and bottom doubles, including another five-set triumph by Aaryon Longo teaming up with Mitchell Curley. Gumeracha White proved to strong winning 10-35 to 5-20.
D Grade
Birdwood Mt Pleasant 12-38 Defeated Lobethal Hunters 3-18
The D Grade grand final featured the same teams as the semi-final, with Lobethal Hunters hoping for a repeat win. Birdwood Mt Pleasant started strong, winning five straight matches before Joy Jaeger won her singles for the Hunters. In the reverse singles, Ian Carpenter, Brendon Heinicke, Luke Markey, and Alysha Seager each won, securing the grand final victory for Birdwood Mt Pleasant. For the Hunters Lynton Vonow secured his reverse singles rubber with a great five set win over Ashton Heinicke. In the doubles Birdwood Mt Pleasant were too strong securing all 3 rubbers and the winning D grade premiership 12-38 to 3-18.
