Tournament 2025
The Torrens Valley Table Tennis Tournament 2025 has been run with some familiar names making the headlines and some young guns stealing the limelight. In the Men’s Open Semi-final Ollie Hughes pushed Darren Stanbury to 5 sets. Hughes was up 8-6 in the fifth before some exceptional blocking by Stanbury brought him back to win 9-11. This meant that Eric Harrison and Darren Stanbury would face off in the Men’s Open final for the second year running. Harrison was determined to add to his Men’s Open titles and didn’t allow Stanbury any balls that could easily be attacked. In the third set Harrison looked like he was going to take the match being up 10-8, before Darren hit some winners to take the set 10-12. However, Harrison closed the match out winning the fourth set.
There were also familiar names in the Women’s final, with Natalie Carpenter again facing off against Corrine O’Shea. Carpenter was looking to reverse the result from last year, and started strongly, winning the first set 11-7 before O’Shea fought back winning the second set 11-5. From then on Carpenter controlled the game, winning the next two sets. The B grade final saw young gun Rex Jaeger victorious against a consistent Michael Parker who was fresh from winning C grade final over Daniel Bamford. Parker took a set to adjust to Jaeger’s spin and pushed him to a tie break, 12-10 in the second and third sets. This was just the start of Rex’s wins in the tournament. He teamed up with Grandpa Walter Jaeger and took out the B Grade doubles before teaming up with father Eric Jaeger for the Open Doubles. Eric Harrison paired with another young gun Joshua Trinkle and made the Open Doubles final and pushed the Eric & Rex Jaeger all the way but fell just short in the fifth set. Harrison did have a win though in the doubles by pairing with Audrey King and taking out the Mixed Doubles title over Todd Gripton and Natalie Carpenter. Joshua Trinkle showed that he is a star in the making by taking out the handicap event, defeating Darren Stanbury in the final.
Thanks to all who participated, organised and umpired to make an enjoyable tournament. Special thanks to Birdwood table tennis club who hosted the event and for setting up early and packing up late at night.
